To Treat Acne, Avoid These Medications

By Carlos Garcia

There are a plethora of acne treatments: ointments of all kinds, lotions, cleansers and alternative remedies. The one thing that most forget to do is to research the harmful effects of many medications when they shop for a remedy. These medications will cause a persistent problem when you're hoping to cure acne.

An example of a common medication that has been proven to create acne is the family of corticosteroids. These are synthetic hormones that are prescribed to treat allergic reactions such as eczema or hives. What most don't realize is that they can also lead to acne, since they are a type of hormone. There is a one-to-one correlation between hormones and acne (think: teenage years!).

Another chemical you don't want if you are treating acne is anabolic-androgenic steroids. Sports professionals have billed them as "performance enhancers," but they don't enhance without cost. Of course, one of the side effects of steroids is acne build-up. Using these drugs, males will breakout on their backs, shoulders and chest. Females will breakout on their face.

Thirdly, barbiturates are on the list. These are very addicting drugs, often given as prescription to treat anxiety or stressed-out patients, even restlessness. They are a type of sedative. Nonetheless, it is also shown they will work against your efforts to cure acne, so avoid them if you can. Treating anxiety and stress may require another solution if you want clear skin.

Yet another commonly prescribed mood-stabilizing treatment is lithium. Those who are diagnosed with bipolar disorder or depression will often receive a prescription. Insofar as its prescribed use, it's excellent at calming the mood and helping your brain synapses to function better. One of the bad side effects is acne. If you want to limit this effect, then ask your doctor to either give you other types of treatment, or find an acne cure that can work with lithium.

If you want to cure acne, you also want to avoid DHEA or "Dehydropiandrosterone." This is a hormone treatment given to combat the effects of aging, and is a derivative of a steroid. It causes acne, as do the other steroid-based medications. The body will metabolize DHEA into testosterone, which may lead to prepubescent-like blemishes. Over the course of time, it will lead to a serious case of acne.

As pointed out, the market is teeming with various products to cure acne. When treating acne, you'll want to know what medications you should avoid, what brings on your acne. Otherwise, you may be left wondering if these effective acne treatments are actually doing their job or not - whilst your prescriptions are the real culprit.
